My partner was away, so I decided to decline invitations from friends, got myself a box of luxury chocolates and just generally treated myself to a nice day.

    It was wonderful

Do you have any Christmas-equivalent in your life?

I guess most cultures do have at least some cozy family gathering event.

I am especially fond of the idea of the Chinese moon festival, love the idea of coming together, eating moon shaped pies and admiring the moon together! :-)

I don’t. I’m an atheist and went no contact with my family ages ago. But sometimes I meet my partner’s family. They are very friendly.

We’re all atheists, but I usually still visit my brother for Christmas. It’s a public holiday so still a rare opportunity to meet up during the year. We usually just laze around, eat, drink and smoke while consuming shitty media or otherwise indulging. We’re not actively making a mockery of it, it’s just what we do when we have nothing to do. We even do token Christmas decorations. Like putting random christmas balls on house plants … or putting santa hats on things.

Sounds dope, and is probably what most are doing.

And regarding the “mockery” and atheists/christians/insert_believe_system_here:
Christmas has imo become mainly a secular event by now, and also somehow heavily mocks itself already, so whatever…

Back when my family still spoke to me I ended up having to spend one Christmas in a lockdown psychiatric facility. Couldn’t even contact them. My life is pure chaos and it’s only getting worse. The part I fear the most is that I’m only middle-aged.

I have been married all through the millenium and I don’t recall not being with people before that. My wife and I have had xmass just together lots though.

In 1994 I spent Christmas alone in Germany. I joined the US Army in may of 93, did all the training etc and got to Germany in November.

It was a blast and really was the most enjoyment I had at Christmas up until that point in my life.

Once, I got a whole pizza pie from the place down the street, and ate it while hanging with my cat and playing some nice single player games.

Another time, a friend of mine surprise ordered me Indian food. Ate it while playing video games with the cat.

Different time, was cat sitting for a friend. She ordered me a pie, which I ate while playing games and chilling with the cat.

    All were pretty good, really.

The why was “I’m not that close with my family, don’t want to travel, and I’m not seeing anyone who invited me”

Lots of people do that every year. Some out of choice, some because they have no choice.

On the other hand, I’m someone who has always been with family. There was only one year where I wasn’t for the day itself and that’s because I was on nights. It was a little hard to deal with, but I’ve had worse experiences.

Like, say, the first summer I had a full time job after decades of school and university and suddenly not getting that six-week break. It was like I couldn’t breathe.

Or the existential horror of working nights and realising that there’s no great reset from one day to the next. You might not even realise you think of time that way until you have to be awake at the “wrong” times. Time’s continuous. No break. No fanfare when the weekday changes. Relentless unending time.

So yeah, that Christmas was kind of lonely, but I slept through most of it, and saw family a day or so later.

Most Christmases I spend alone. I used to have a good paying job so I would buy myself a Christmas present. I lost my job because of Trump and Musk cuts to government contractors. Last Christmas, I watched Looney Toons on Internet Archive under a blanket, trying not to think how lonely I am, cold I am, or how hungry I am.

    I hate Christmas.

A few, it was just like any weekend day except I couldn’t go shopping.

Christmas doesn’t have any significance to me or my mother, so we don’t go out of our way to spend time together. In fact she tends to gleefully pick up extra hours at work because they pay her more. If I’m single or my partner is unavailable this results in me spending Christmas alone, which I honestly enjoy. If I’m in a relationship, I usually get sucked into whatever Christmas shenanigans my partner’s family gets up to.
