zuck did immeasurable harm to vr by trying to dominate the field. utter decimation of expectations. he made a fool out of all of it.

i like what i’ve seen about the steam frame so far and look forward to having one hopefully. never, not once, not ever, shall i pressure anyone else into it; it’s a personal interest, personal to ME and others who choose to adopt it.

I hate the purported FOMO those bastards always promote to wide-eyed numbskulls wanting to be on the cutting edge of anything. Or mobsters wanting to get their money either laundered or splurge onto the most absurd.

I met someone once who had “invested” in these. Like, thousands of pounds. He thought he was super clever, talked down to us because we were so far out of the loop. I do wonder what happened to him. Poor guy.

The moment it was clear they couldn’t figure out what the “Next Big Thing” was they started throwing shit at the wall before going “well if we can’t find the next best thing, we’ll force it on them!”

That’s how we got to where we are with AI.

To be fair, crypto only enabled scams, NFTs imploded because of how useless they are and the metaverse seems like a dystopia to most people. AI on the other hand has changed the way I do my job significantly. It’s not just a promise, it’s a genuinely powerful tool.

Isn’t Trump the self proclaimed crypto president? Isn’t crypto the main source of his family’s wealth by now?

I’ve never seen any price displayed in Dogecoin, Safemoon or CumRocket, nor have I ever been offered Shiba, Bitcoin or Monero for anything. It’s been almost 20 fucking years and you can’t pay shit with crypto. The only thing that works perfectly in crypro is paying bribes to Trump by buying his own shitcoin, which many sketchy rich people have done. No, this is not the salvation you are looking for, it only makes everything worse.

If LLMs weren’t a tool to extract knowledge from people and dumb them down while preventing them from accessing wealth and they were environmentally sustainable, then I could see them as a useful tool. I don’t want to boil the planet so that an LLM can generate the minutes of yet another unnecessary meeting, I want not to have to hand in minutes of unnecessary meetings.

The metaverse twist was certainly useless and realized in the most uninsipred soulless way, but vr otherwise has some utility and can be entertaining to a niche.

AI as so far realized has some utility, but a handful of asshats are similarly supremely obnoxious about it, and in my experience way more people are being obnoxious about it than it is useful.

Its not just ___ its ____.

But fr, in academic fields its certainly helpful to have super human pattern recognition. In most fields, however, its just slop generation. Creative fields and now even code are being flooded with garbage and I dont think we’ll be able to fix it. Sure, some places are benefiting, but on the whole its just a massive black hole of hand-holding and flooding that we’ll be cleaning up for decades.

Ageing a really funny experience. As a young person being left behind like that was unthinkable. I’d do anything to not get left behind. Now that I am a lot older I couldn’t care less if I get left behind. I’ve found what makes me happy, I don’t need to keep up anymore. It’s so freeing.

FOMO comes along a lot when you’re younger.

Then you MO a lot, for various reasons, and you realize it’s not a big deal.

If you don’t MO, then you never develop the FO, and then next thing you know, you’re in a FAFO loop.

Even if every developer has a max subscription and uses it to mostly or completely automate their coding activities…how many people is that? A few hundred thousand? Where are these supposed revenues going to come from?

Hah, and then nobody will buy it. They tried to up token prices earlier this year and were forced to go back to selling $10000 of compute for $100 in like a month because usage dropped off.

Not arguing your point, but a few hundred thousand…?

If you’re going to be making an argument, at least get the most basic of your facts right.

Globally there are about 40-50 million software engineers. A hell of a lot more than a few hundred thousand. 1/10th of that is in the U.S.

I was guessing, sure, but apparently so were you:

        https://www.jetbrains.com/lp/devecosystem-data-playground/

Even if the numbers are what you’re saying they are…and the same number of full-time developers transition to become full-time prompters (doubtful), and every one of them buys a $100 a month subscription that’s only 60 some odd billion a year. They’re projecting revenues to grow into the trillions per year. Literally how?

It’s painfully obvious to me as a (reluctant) daily user of these things that most people will have no use for it.

Maybe there are some people for whom the bar to entry for software development was that they didn’t want to learn a programming language but were otherwise very technical and wanted to create software, but that seems like it’s a small amount of people.

Aside from the coding itself, developing software with Claude has all of the same problems developing software without it had.

There are also new risks to developing software with it, because among other things it further siloes developers (into teams of one + chatbot).

VR is cool and the new meta glasses that are basically a vr headset in a glasses form factor is the direction that will make it far better. Too bad it’s all ruined because it’s a meta product and they insist you have an account for what is undoubtedly the most aggressive data collection in the entire world
