I will never understand people who not only actively support the military and soldiers, but want to become a soldier by their own free will…

IME, unless it’s for papers and whatnot, it’s usually because your brain doesn’t work so you have no options outside of it (and your brain is so atrophied that morality is not considered either).

Cause some people are psychos. Like I understand if a poor kid has no other means to get out of their situation and thus joins the army. But there are many middle class families with several generations of high ranking service members. These people are just straight up psycho, they have all the inside knowledge of what the military actually does and they still force their kids to join the military academy.

People are heavily propagandized to from a very young age. For example, GI Joe. Hundreds of other examples as well. They want to shape kids that think of the military as good and benevolent.

Netanyahu’s sons did serve in the Israeli military, although how much danger they were actually in is unknown to me, and Netanyahu himself has extensive combat experience.

One of Netanyahu’s sons was a press officer behind the lines, but the other was with combat intelligence at the front.

Israel is different in this regard. Everybody serves in the army. It’s also a small country. The military Is closely woven into society. The IDF is not a professional army, but mostly made up of reservists who are called up as needed. That means the political leaders will know people personally who have to fight.

What unit you serve in can make a big difference for your later success in life. Combat units, special forces, Air Force, and intelligence have the highest prestige.

Politicians benefit immensely in their credibility, if they have a distinct military career.

That’s fine and if the Israelis and US decide to invade Iran, the IDF can lead the charge with a an amphibious assault. Right? You know who else had a closely woven society between the military and society? The fucking Nazis and Bolsheviks!

I hate seeing this comforting fiction.

The truth is there are absolutely tens of millions of people who think Trump is fantastic and will bend over backwards to vocally support him for virtually anything he does. Some of those people have Reddit accounts. Most of those frequent /r/conservative.

Are there bots among them? Almost certainly. We do see slowdowns there whenever overseas propaganda mills go down. Then there’s the Twitter fiasco where so many of their MAGA influencers turned out to be from Eurasia.

But patting each other on the back about how 80% of them are bots serves only to undermine the passion with which people should be opposing MAGA. I guarantee many would-be Clinton and Harris voters stayed home because they were sure MAGA was an extremely vocal minority almost entirely propped up by bots. Just look at the aftermath of those elections on Reddit and Lemmy; it’s generally mass confusion.

I’m not comforting anyone, this is reality. How many Magas show up here? They can’t talk to us because they get their asses handed to them. The bot to maga ratio also doesn’t lend itself to helping them out. If you’re talking truth social? Then yeah, maybe it’s 80% real people.

MAGAs see that reading the Communist Manifesto is a requirement for entry and simply don’t bother. They have X, Truth Social, Reddit, etc. to party on, and they’re fine with the downsides of those platforms, i.e. supporting oligarchy/technocracy.

It’s not that they “get their asses handed to them,” they’re just not here.

Compare your perception of reality with election results. Even if Trump cheated like he probably did, I doubt it was bigger than single digit percentages.

TL;DR: You simply don’t witness enough MAGAs and you naturally assume they must not exist.

I’ve felt this way before, but I also wonder if I would have had kids in another life where the world wasn’t so fucked. I feel occasionally that I was robbed of parenthood by our current state of things.

The rich vs. the rest of us.

The one small consolation is that we don’t have a military draft, and most young people who pursue the military have a family with military service background. However, the other largest cohort are young people with no family support structures at all, so they give their lives to the war machine to try to do things like get an education.

Still, people choosing to enter military service is way down and more US citizens than ever fail to meet the fitness standards and requirements.

So, it’s not really “your kids” unless you chose to push them to military service or were such a bad/absent/dead parent that they had few other choices.

Now, if they try re-instating the draft, than this meme will be a lot more accurate.

This of course is not meant to minimize how insane this push for war is, nor how damaging it will be to those who are in military service, for whom this meme is very accurate.

It is automatic. As Vietnam proves. People shipped against their will to die in a meaningless war of agression. You are state property, you’re just taking care of it until they need it.

I work with 100% veterans and active duty. I have thousands of clients, all veterans or active duty.

The vast majority of people do not join because of family tradition. The vast majority join for the absolutely insane benefits that come along with service.

Many of them also join because it is basically their only/best option.

I won’t dispute your lived experience, I just know that I have read about families with prior military service being more likely to have children who similarly prioritize service. Thanks for being a support for them.

The lower class always suffers the most during a war. The MAGA fucks are visiting their private doctors to get a bone spurs excuse.
